Maybe Andy Warhol? Or maybe even a unicorn galloping through the pottery showering rainbows of color onto pots? The Exhibition of Color Homage Gallery release will take a bold and fresh new exploration of color on Rookwood pots. This is a forward-thinking endeavor, not for our traditional pottery customers, but for those on the cutting edge of relevant and evolving art. Abstract and unexpected displays of colorful glaze art on both modern and traditional forms will be presented. These are meant to be abstract in style, but interesting in their complexity and nuance. Unique, but definitely not traditional Rookwood. We hope you enjoy this limited release.

Inspired by the 1920s Chang Glaze by Royal Doulton, Rookwood’s Exhibition of Color will feature bold and striking colors dripping and oozing from the tops of pots. Thick white glaze with splashes of random and melting colors will make these pieces wonderfully unique and inspiring. Each view and turn of the vase will unveil a new burst of color, thus the name of the release, The Exhibition of Color. Exciting and fresh, this is a modern and colorful interpretation of glaze art on Rookwood forms.

The Exhibition of Color Rookwood small batch release is an innovative glaze treatment on hand thrown forms. Through research and development, various glazes were combined by our artists to create complex layering, dripping, and blending of glazes. Some vases were fired multiple times, with more glazes being added each time. Early combinations proved cannibalistic, colors disappearing in the kiln firing. Through repeated test trials, a basic glaze combination produced brilliant colors juxtaposed with white. Colors pulled and melted, evolving into true abstract art with pronounced and desired radical drips.

This is glaze art that cannot be repeated due to multiple firings, application of additional glazes, and slope of form. The glaze blending during the melt of the firing makes each square inch of these vases unique, vases that are best seen in person and studied by turning and exploring the beauty. Colors that are interesting, unique, and possibly reminiscent of perhaps, the seventies. Beauty that is meant for those who enjoy abstract representations of the color of glaze artistry.

As this is such a special, small batch release, each vase is marked with the Rookwood Homage Stamp. All items sold will remain on display in our gallery until April 30th.

Due to the drips and runs associated with this glaze outcome, grinding of drips at the base are common and considered acceptable. These will be noted. Glaze skips can also occur as the thick glaze often pulls during the melt of the firing. These thin glaze areas are also an artifact of the layering process.

"A companion vase to #14, this tall bottle vase was done in red, white, and blue. The mauve-burgundy neck intermingles with the dark blue with pulls at the neck creating dimension to the melt. The blue descends with the white to the bottom of the vase in a beautiful curtain, and the red background glaze emerges through the white for interesting breakthrough into the creamy white field. A two inch drip grind at the base that does not distract."
One of a kind vase, hand-thrown by Rebecca Rohr and expertly hand decorated by Heidi Shannon. A truly unique piece to add to (or start!) your collection. Only one available.
